If you’re working toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), a major change could be on the horizon—and time may be running out to secure your student loan forgiveness as the PSLF buy back program deadline is near.

President Trump has announced plans to modify which types of organizations qualify for PSLF. That means if you haven’t already received forgiveness, your eligibility could be at risk—especially if you work for a university, hospital, certain NGOs, or nonprofits involved in immigration-related work. Even medical residents and others employed by non-governmental organizations could be affected.

“This is a game-changer,” says Christina Randell, President of My Education Solutions, a student loan management company. “If you’ve made 100 qualifying payments, you may be able to take advantage of the temporary ‘Buy Back’ option to complete your forgiveness now—before any policy changes go into effect.”

What Is the Buy Back Program?

The PSLF Buy Back program, offered by the U.S. Department of Education, allows borrowers to retroactively count certain months toward forgiveness. Specifically, you can “buy back” months that were previously ineligible due to deferment or forbearance—if you meet these conditions:

  • You still have a loan balance
  • You were employed full-time by a qualifying employer during the months in question
  • The buy back would complete your 120 required payments for PSLF

This is a limited-time opportunity. Once the administration finalizes changes to PSLF eligibility, you may no longer qualify—no matter how close you are to the finish line.

“Don’t wait until it’s too late,” Randell urges. “Our student loan advisors are ready to guide you through the buy back process and help you lock in forgiveness before the rules change.”
